As a private chef based in the stunning Lake District, every day is a unique
adventure filled with culinary creativity and the joy of bringing exceptional dining
experiences to my clients. Join me as I take you through a typical day, highlighting
the meticulous preparation, planning, and execution of a special dinner service,
featuring some of my favourite local suppliers.
Morning: Planning and Preparation
My day usually begins early in the morning when the tranquillity of the Lake District is still palpable. I start by reviewing the pre-order for the Spring Buttermere menu chosen by my guests for the evening’s dinner service. Each event is tailored to my clients’ preferences, dietary needs, and the season’s offerings.
With the orders finalised from the menu, I expect my deliveries from my trusted
suppliers today. Winter Tarn Butter, known for its rich, creamy texture, will be perfect for making my sweet pastry, bread rolls, and sauces. Cartmel Valley Game are due to deliver some exquisite smoked duck. This local delicacy is renowned for its unique flavour and will add an elegant touch to my smoked duck starter.
Midday: Preparing in the Production Kitchen
With my ingredients delivered from all my suppliers, I start my preparations in my
production kitchen, which is just on the outskirts of Kendal and serves as the base of my culinary operations. The preparation stage is critical. I carefully portion the duck and prepare a seasonal salad that features in the dish. I also start making the lemon butter sauce with Winter Tarn Butter, infusing it with fresh herbs to elevate the dish's flavour.
As I work, I’m mindful of timing. I need to ensure that everything is prepared and
ready to go for the dinner service while maintaining the quality and integrity of the
ingredients. My production kitchen is organised and efficient, allowing me to
multitask without compromising on quality.
Afternoon: Final Touches and Packing Up
After a few hours of preparation, I begin to assemble all my preparations for this
evening’s dinner party. Each dish is a work of art, showcasing the beauty of the local produce. Once everything is prepared, I carefully pack the dishes, ensuring they are secure for transport.
Evening: Arrival at the Client's Venue
Once everything is packed and ready, I head to the client’s venue, where their dinner will take place. I arrive an hour before the starters are to be served and begin to set up the dining area, ensuring a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. I set the table with cutlery, crockery, and napkins, placing my ingredients and tools within reach for easy access.
As the guests arrive, I welcome them and explain the menu, highlighting the local
ingredients and suppliers that inspired each dish. It’s important for me to share the story behind the food, as it adds an extra layer of appreciation for the meal they are about to enjoy.
Dinner Service: The Grand Finale
Once everything is in place, I welcome the guests and explain the dishes as we
serve each course at a comfortable pace. The guests savour each bite, and their
smiles reassure me that all the hard work has paid off. During the meal, I continue to explain the menu, highlighting the local ingredients and suppliers that inspired each dish. It’s important for me to share the story behind the food, as it adds an extra layer of appreciation for the meal they are about to enjoy.
As the evening unfolds, I continue to serve each course, ensuring that the timing is
impeccable. I thrive on the energy of the dining experience, engaging with the guests and sharing insights about the dishes. By the end of the night, as the last plate is cleared and satisfied guests express their gratitude, I feel a deep sense of fulfilment.
